What is the Online Compass?
Turn your phone into a digital compass without installing an app. The dial rotates as you turn, and the large number shows your heading in degrees with the direction (N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW).
It uses your phone’s magnetometer (compass sensor). Laptops and most desktop computers do not have one.
How to use the Online Compass
- Open this page on your phone.
- Press Start compass (on iPhone, tap Allow for motion access).
- Hold the phone flat and turn slowly. The red needle points to north.
- If readings jump, move the phone in a figure-8 to calibrate.
Tips for accuracy
- Keep away from magnets, metal tables, speakers and cars.
- Remove magnetic phone cases or holders.
- This shows magnetic north; true north differs slightly depending on where you are.
