Light Meter (Lux Estimate with Camera)

Estimate how bright a room or workspace is with your phone camera – relative brightness and approximate lux, with recommended lighting levels for reading, office work and plants.

Utility Tools Free Private

Uses your camera to estimate brightness. Nothing is recorded.

What is the Light Meter?

Good lighting reduces eye strain and helps plants grow. This tool reads the brightness seen by your camera and converts it to an approximate lux value and a simple scale (dark → very bright). Point the camera at the area you want to measure – for example your desk – after allowing camera access. Compare readings between rooms or times of day.

How to use the Light Meter

  1. Tap Start and allow camera access.
  2. Point the camera at the surface you want to measure and hold still.
  3. Read the brightness level and compare with the recommendations.

Recommended light levels

  • Corridors: 100 lux
  • Living room: 150–300 lux
  • Office / study desk: 300–500 lux
  • Detailed work / sewing: 750–1000 lux
  • Houseplants (bright indirect): 1,000–10,000 lux

Accuracy

Phone cameras adjust exposure automatically, so values are rough estimates – use a dedicated lux meter for professional needs.

This Light Meter is 100% free, needs no signup and runs privately in your browser – on phone, tablet or computer.
