What is the Significant Figures Calculator?
Significant figures (sig figs) show how precise a measurement is. Type a number exactly as written (trailing zeros and decimal points matter!) to count its sig figs and see which digits are significant. Then round it to any number of significant figures.
How to use the Significant Figures Calculator
- Type the number as written, e.g. 0.004050 or 1200.
- See the count with significant digits highlighted.
- Choose sig figs to round to.
The rules
- All non-zero digits are significant.
- Zeros between non-zero digits are significant (1002 → 4).
- Leading zeros are never significant (0.0045 → 2).
- Trailing zeros are significant only if there is a decimal point (2.500 → 4, 2500 → 2).
This Significant Figures Calculator is 100% free, needs no signup and runs privately in your browser – on phone, tablet or computer.
