Check how strong your password is, estimate crack time and get tips – checked privately in your browser.
What is the Password Strength Checker?
Is your password strong enough? This password strength checker measures length, character variety and entropy, spots common passwords and patterns like "123" or "qwerty", and estimates how long an offline attack would take to crack it. It then gives clear tips to make it stronger.
The check runs completely in your browser – your password is never sent anywhere.
How to use the Password Strength Checker
- Type a password (or a similar test password).
- See the strength level, entropy and estimated crack time.
- Follow the tips, or create a new one with our Password Generator.
What makes a password strong?
- Length – each extra character multiplies the possible combinations.
- Variety – mix upper and lower case, numbers and symbols.
- Randomness – avoid names, dates, keyboard patterns and dictionary words.
- Uniqueness – never reuse passwords across sites.
Entropy explained
Entropy (in bits) estimates how many guesses are needed: 40 bits ≈ 1 trillion guesses, 80+ bits is considered very strong. A random 16-character password with all character types has around 100 bits.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to type my real password here?
The check is offline in your browser, but as a habit you can test a similar password instead of your real one.
How accurate is the crack time?
It assumes 10 billion guesses per second against a leaked hash – a rough guide only.
Is a long passphrase better than a complex short password?
Usually yes. Four or five random words are both strong and easy to remember.
Should I change passwords regularly?
Change them when there is a breach or you reused them; otherwise use unique, strong passwords with 2FA.
This password strength checker is 100% free, needs no signup and works on phones, tablets and computers. Your data is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
