What is the Sound Meter?
The Sound Meter uses your device microphone to show how loud your surroundings are in decibels (dB). See the live level, the minimum, average and maximum, and a simple guide that tells you if the noise is quiet, normal, loud or harmful.
Use it to check a noisy neighbour, a classroom, a generator, traffic outside your home or a baby’s room.
How to use the Sound Meter
- Press Start measuring. Your browser will ask for microphone permission – click Allow.
- Hold the phone steady and away from your mouth.
- Watch the live dB value and the history chart. Press Reset to start a new reading.
Noise level guide
- 30 dB – whisper, quiet bedroom
- 50 dB – quiet office, light rain
- 60–70 dB – normal conversation, busy restaurant
- 80–85 dB – heavy traffic, generator (limit for long exposure)
- 100+ dB – motorbike, concert – can damage hearing quickly
Accuracy
Phone and laptop microphones are not calibrated, and browsers may apply automatic gain. Readings are an estimate (usually within ±5–10 dB). Use the calibration box to match a real sound meter if you have one.
This Sound Meter is 100% free, needs no signup and runs privately in your browser – on phone, tablet or computer.
