What is the Online Hearing Test?
Our ears slowly lose the ability to hear very high sounds with age. Children can often hear up to 18–20 kHz, while many adults over 40 stop hearing around 12–14 kHz. This quick test plays tones from high to low and finds the highest pitch you can hear.
It takes about a minute. Use headphones in a quiet room for the best result.
How to use the Online Hearing Test
- Put on headphones and set your device volume to about 50%.
- Press Start test. Tones start very high and get lower.
- Press I can hear it as soon as you hear a tone.
- Read your hearing range and typical hearing age. Test each ear separately if you like.
Typical hearing range by age
- Under 20: up to 17–20 kHz
- 20–30: up to 16–17 kHz
- 30–40: up to 15 kHz
- 40–50: up to 12–14 kHz
- 50+: up to 8–12 kHz
Important
This is a fun screening tool, not a medical test. Cheap speakers or earbuds may not play very high frequencies. If you notice hearing loss, ringing or pain, please see an audiologist or ENT doctor.
This Online Hearing Test is 100% free, needs no signup and runs privately in your browser – on phone, tablet or computer.
