Convert text and emojis to Base64 and back, with an option for URL-safe Base64.
What is the Base64 Encoder / Decoder?
Base64 turns any data into plain letters and numbers so it can travel safely through email, URLs, JSON and HTML. This tool encodes text to Base64 and decodes Base64 back to readable text, with full UTF-8 support – so Urdu, Arabic, Chinese and emojis all work correctly.
Developers use it to read API tokens, embed small files, debug HTTP Basic Auth headers and pass data in URLs. Turn on URL-safe mode to replace + and / with - and _ for links and JWTs.
How to use the Base64 Encoder / Decoder
- Paste text (or Base64) into the input box.
- Click Encode or Decode.
- Copy the result or use it as the next input.
How Base64 works
Base64 takes every 3 bytes of data (24 bits) and splits them into 4 groups of 6 bits. Each group maps to one of 64 characters: A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /. That is why Base64 output is about 33% larger than the original. "=" padding is added at the end when the data is not a multiple of 3 bytes.
Base64 is not encryption
Anyone can decode Base64 in seconds – it only changes the format, not the secrecy. To protect private text, use our Text Encryption tool with a password instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is URL-safe Base64?
A variant that uses - and _ instead of + and / and removes = padding, so the result can be used in URLs and filenames.
Why do I get strange characters when decoding?
The Base64 may contain a binary file (like an image), not text. Try our Image to Base64 tool for images.
Does it support emojis?
Yes. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes before encoding.
Is my data uploaded?
No, everything happens in your browser.
This base64 encoder / decoder is 100% free, needs no signup and works on phones, tablets and computers. Your data is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
