What is the Reading Speed Test?
Read a short passage at your normal pace – tap Start when you begin and Done when you finish. The tool calculates your reading speed in words per minute (WPM), then asks three quick questions so speed is balanced with understanding. You can also paste your own text to time yourself.
How to use the Reading Speed Test
- Choose a passage (or paste your own).
- Tap Start, read normally, then tap Done.
- Answer the questions and see your WPM and effective speed.
Average reading speeds
- Primary students: 80–150 WPM
- Adults: 200–300 WPM
- Fast readers: 400+ WPM with good comprehension
Read faster
- Don’t re-read lines – use a finger or pen as a guide.
- Stop “saying” words in your head for easy texts.
- Read a little every day.
This Reading Speed Test is 100% free, needs no signup and runs privately in your browser – on phone, tablet or computer.
